NEW DELHI: American e-retail giant Amazon.com said it will commence the first production line of Amazon Fire TV Stick devices in India later this year in partnership with Foxconn’s subsidiary Cloud Network Technology in Chennai under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Amit Agarwal, SVP and Country Head, Amazon, said the company has committed to invest $1 billion to digitize 10 million small and medium businesses which will, as a result, enable exports of up to $10 billion and creation of up to 1 million jobs in the country.

Amazon said hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Sticks would be produced per year, helping it meet the demands of Indian customers.

“Amazon will continuously evaluate scaling capacity to additional marketplaces/cities depending on the domestic demand,” the company said in a blog post.

“We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well. This will further our mission of creating an Atmanirbhar Bharat which is digitally empowered,” said Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice, on the development.

“Today, we are delighted to announce Amazon’s first manufacturing line in India to produce hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Stick devices every year catering to the demands of the Indian customers. This further reiterates our commitment to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative,” Agarwal added further.In 2020 Amazon announced the ‘Local Shops on Amazon’, a program that retailers and local shops be Atmanirbhar, and benefit from selling online.

According to the company, the program has signed up over 22,000 neighborhood stores across the country, helping them to gather additional footfall through their online presence, and increasing earning potential through various means.
