Green energy milestone

April has seen a new record achieved for green electricity in the UK. Amid the Easter celebration Britain’s electricity system was the greenest ever!

Monday 5th April at 13:00 BST saw 80% of power being generated from renewable sources. The electricity mix was comprised of; 39% wind, 21% solar, 16% nuclear and 4% biomass. At the same time a record low level of CO2 emissions per unit of electricity consumed was achieved at 39 gCO2 [1]

This can be added to the firsts for renewable energy over the past year.

“This latest record is another example of how the grid continues to transform at an astonishing rate as we move away from fossil fuel generation and harness the growth of renewable power sources” [2]

These record figures have been accredited to the perfect sunny yet blustery conditions of the spring day, along with low demand 1. But this is no anomaly, the grid has seen a sustained reduction in the amount of fossil fuels in the energy mix. This has been sustained all year with more than 48% of electricity generated originating from fossil fuels in January, reduced to 44% in April [3]

“It’s an exciting time, and the progress we’re seeing with these records underlines the significant strides we’re taking towards our ambition of being able to operate the system carbon free by 2025” [2]

The UK government aims to help continue the increase in green electricity generation, driving the green revolution and accelerating the countries progress in achieving net zero emissions by 2050 [4]. Sustaining the high level of renewables in the electricity generation mix is crucial.
